Winter wanderlust: dream retirement destinations

Whether you’re dreaming of a new adventure or simply looking forward to a peaceful retirement, having a well-thought-out plan makes all the difference. In an ever-changing world, ensuring your financial wellbeing should be at the top of your list.
We’ve asked local travel expert and friend of Abode, Cleo de Rose for her top 3 winter sun destinations. Over to Cleo…
Now summer has drawn to a close earlier than we would like in the UK, now is the perfect time to think about your winter sun and long-haul travel.
Whilst you can certainly choose to lie in the sun in the Caribbean or The Maldives, you may also wish to be more active and really explore these far-flung areas of the world.
My top 3 recommendations are:

Japan

Japan
Perfect to explore by rail with their efficient rail service and famous bullet train, it is easy to explore the country from North to South visiting the following locations amongst others:
  • Hokkaido – start in the very north of the region arriving at Sapporo a city famous for its natural surroundings. In season you can enjoy the sight of carpets of colourful flowers sweeping the hillsides.
  • Tokyo – mixing the ultra-modern and the traditional, neon lit skyscrapers to historic temples. The opulent Meiji Shinto Shrine is known for its towering gate and surrounding woods
  • Mount Fuji – Travel to the 5th station and learn all about the revered mountain. Continue to nearby Lake Ashi for a short boat cruise followed by a ride on the Mt Komogatake ropeway. Climb by aerial tram to the top of the mountain and get fantastic views of the Owakudani volcanic valley.
  • Osaka – known for its modern architecture, nightlife and hearty street food as well as the 16th century shogunate Osaka Catle, you can also discover Kyoto whilst staying in Osaka.
Whilst many dream of seeing Japan in the spring with the blossoms it is very busy then as that is also during Japanese holidays and that is the most expensive time to go as well. I also recommend visiting in the fall when the trees have an incredible array of reds and oranges. Both are incredibly beautiful.

Vietnam

Vietnam
I would visit Vietnam for the food alone, but this country has so much to offer from vibrant cities to stunning landscapes.
  • Hanoi – the capital of Vietnam, this is a city of lakes and parks, tree lined streets and a very rich history. Hanoi has many attractions, including the Old Quarter, ancient pagodas, museums, and Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum. The Old Quarter is a maze of narrow alleyways named after goods that were once traded there.
  • Ha Long Bay is a beautiful natural wonder dotted with 1600 limestone islands over a huge area. There are spectacular caves such as Hang Trong which has wide-arched entrances and a ceiling covered in stalactites. You can kayak and rock climb in this area.
  • Hue – the Imperial city famed for its royal palaces and temples but also for its refined cuisine such as banh loc goi (steamed dumplings) and its famous mango salad which is a sweet and spicy medley of fresh ingredients.
  • Hoi An – this ancient and charming town has incredible preserved architecture, lantern lit streets and quaint markets.
  • Ho Chi Minh City – Formerly known as Saigon this city has a rich history and diverse culture with a mix of old and new Vietnam. You will also see influences from France here including in the cuisine from the time
My top tip is to pack for the climate. The south of the island sits firmly in the tropics but is much milder the further north you go so you need to be prepared for varied weather if you tour a lot of the country.

Abu Dhabi

Abu-dhabi
Visiting Abu Dhabi offers a unique blend of modern luxury, cultural heritage, and stunning natural landscapes. Here are some compelling reasons to visit:
  • Cultural Experiences – The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most magnificent mosques in the world, showcasing Islamic architecture and culture. Abu Dhabi also hosts the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a world-class art museum with a diverse collection.
  • Luxury and Modernity – The city is known for its luxurious hotels, resorts, and shopping destinations like Yas Mall. The architecture is futuristic, with landmarks like the Etihad Towers and the Aldar HQ building.
  • Entertainment and Adventure – Yas Island is home to Ferrari World, the fastest roller coaster in the world, and Yas Waterworld, making it a hub for family fun and thrill-seekers. The city also offers desert safaris, dune bashing, and kayaking in the mangroves.
  • Natural Beauty – Abu Dhabi has stunning beaches like Saadiyat Island and Corniche Beach, perfect for relaxation and water sports. The nearby Liwa Desert offers vast, golden sand dunes for adventurous travellers who wish to do a desert safari.
  • Culinary Delights – From traditional Emirati cuisine to international gourmet experiences, Abu Dhabi offers a wide range of dining options, including Michelin-star restaurants.
  • Rich Heritage – The city’s history can be explored through sites like Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi, and Al Ain Oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage site showcasing traditional irrigation techniques.
I love to recommend Abu Dhabi for family travel. There is just so much to do here for children of all ages! It has just been voted one of the world’s safest cities which is also reassuring when travelling with your children.
